James J. Vance

Education

Attorney Vance was born in Madison, Wisconsin, on March 17, 1933. He is a graduate of Fort Atkinson High School and continued his education at Beloit College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955, and the University of Wisconsin Law School earning a Doctor of Law in 1958. He was a member of the Phi Delta Phi Fraternity.

Background and Memberships

Attorney Vance was admitted to the State Bar of Wisconsin in 1958 and admitted to the Federal Court for the Western District of Wisconsin also in 1958.

Attorney Vance is a member of the Jefferson County and American Bar Associations and the State Bar of Wisconsin. He served as treasurer of the State Bar of Wisconsin from 1975 to 1977 and has been a director of the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section since 1967 and served as the Section’s chairman from 1972 to 1975.

Attorney Vance is also a member of the American College of Trusts and Estate Counsel and the American College of Real Estate Lawyers.

Practice Areas

Attorney Vance practices in the areas of real estate law, probate law, estate planning, business, corporations, LLCs and LLPs and tax law. Attorney Vance is well regarded throughout the state for his knowledge of real estate law and is the author of Titles to Real Estate, a resource published by the University of Wisconsin Law School Continuing Education Division in 1977 with supplements in 1983, 1986 and 1998.

Public Service

Attorney Vance has nearly three decades of service to the Fort Atkinson Community. He has served as the secretary of both the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation and the Fort Atkinson Memorial Hospital Foundation. He is the past president of the Fort Atkinson Chamber of Commerce and has served as a Chamber Ambassador for over 25 years. In October of 2001, he received the Friend of the Chamber of Commerce Award and in January of 2002 received the Fort Atkinson Area Chamber of Commerce Economic Contribution Award. Attorney Vance is a former director of the Fort Atkinson United Way and the fund drive chairman as well as being a former director and secretary of the Koshkonong Mounds Country Club. He is a former member of the Jaycees and is the current secretary and director of the Fort Atkinson Industrial Development Corporation.
